Intellectual Musings of Mr. Walsh's Two Sophomore English Classes.
so far i have read Part 1 of "its kind of a funny story". i really like the story so far because it is very easy to read and understand. the only thing that i do not like is that after each chapter the topic is very different. i am very interested in finding out what makes Craig so depressed and sad. i think that craig isa pretty messed up kid but i dont know why yet. what do you think about craig so far?
Hi Will!I also would like to know what Craig's condition is. It's got to be more than just depression because he can't even eat. The way he describes it is, "When I do eat, it's one of two experience: a Battle or a Slaughter." (33)Usually that doesn't happen unless when you have had an eating disorder for long time? I Craig is just pretty messed up as well. Do you understand his lingo/the way he talks? Anchor...Tentacles...
Like Will, I’ve just finished reading the 1st part of the book. I don’t really know if I like this book, some of the description that Craig describes is really vivid, how there a little mans down there in his stomach that’s deciding if Craig could eat or not. Like what Lynn said, when Craig does eat it’s either a Shift or a Battle, and it all depends on the little man. I thought it’s kind of weird; does he have a mental disorder or something? I noticed that he kept on mentioning that something happened “during the fall of last year.” What do you think happened that made Craig this way?
Like Katherine I also had a few questions about the Army Guy. When it first happened I was really confused about how it just randomly was a guy from the army talking to him. I didn't get it at all. Also, Is it just me or do you think Aaron is ruining Craig's life? Craig was the smartest kid and then he started smoking pot with Aaron and became stupid. What do you think?
I don't think Aaron was the guy that ruin Craigs' life. Right now the story is taking in present form, but later in the story I think there will be a flashback. In the brief summary it said that Carig will get into a great high school, but the pressure of it will drive him to suicide. If Carig is seeing the shrink already, it must of meant that he already went to that school, had the suicidal episode. What do you guys think? I'm just making predictions based on what I read. Still have to finish the other half assigned pages that we have to read.
hi guys i love this book so far. its great my favorite character is AAron. i think that Craig's depression began around the time of Aaron's party. i think that he is upset to see his best friend growing up and getting a girlfrien, Nia and leaving craig by himself. i don't think that it is at all Aaron's fault for Craig being so depressed i think it is just all of the changes going on. What do you guys think.
I know it's horrible, but I haven't finished reading the first part, so I haven't met the army guy yet. However, I agree with Katherine. Since he is seeing a shrink now, he had some time of problem before. The thing that is interesting to me is how he says he likes simplicity, and simple things, but he wanted to be a map creator-thing. Maps are complex, and most definately intricate, there are millions of lines in all different directions, but that was his passion. I guess it is kind of contradicting considering that maps for complex, yet he says he likes simple things. However, that was in the past, I wonder what happened that made him change so much. He also has friands, and a family who loves him, I don't see why he is so depressed. He is also so open about it, he's like waving a flag and saying, look at me i'm depressed.
Great minds thing alike, we blogged practically same time.
I think that Craig wouldn't be depressed anymore if he kept on taking the pills he was giving by his doctor. When he was taking them he said he was felling good for about three weeks. Then he stopped taking them and he became depressed again. We still don't know the real reason of why he is depressed in the first place, but I think he should have just kept taking the pills.
I finally finished reading that took me a while. I agree with Lynn when she said that Craig is very open, when he noticed that he's depressed he immediately told his parents about it. He didn't try to hide it or anything, which is surprising because now-a-days when teenagers are depressed they don't want to admit it. They try to hide it instead, and often times when they realizeed that they need professional help, it's too late. I want to go back to the point when we're talking about how Craig got depressed in the first place. He said that it was due to the stress of overload homework, he feels that he isn't smart comparing to other people in his class. He only knows how to study, while others do extra activities like sport or clubs. Some people like Aaron, his best friend, doesn't even have to study and gets higher grades than him. I think Aaron had a part in Craig becoming depressed, if it wasn't for Aaron, Craig wouldn't had to start smoking pot, partying, and start slacking off on his study.
I just finished reading the second assignment, it was so quick. Ok well, Craig has checked himself into the hospital. I thought it was hilarious when his mom brought him a bag of clothes, and he had no idea why. Then he realizes it's because he has to stay for 5 days. What do you guys think will happen? What do you think happened to Noelle? If she has cuts on her face it's obvious, but she keeps avoiding Craig.
I’m not finish with the whole assignment yet; I stopped when Craig realizes that he’s being put in the mental ward. I was surprised that he was just realizing it; shouldn’t he know that he’s being admitted into the mental hospital? To answer Lynn’s question, I thought Craig’s mom was physics or something, she knows that he’s going to be needed extra set of clothes, that’s why she brought some. I felt really bad when she apologized to Craig, about how she didn’t realize that he was that depressed. She shouldn’t put all the blame to herself, it’s not her fault; no one realizes the extremeness of Craig’s condition. She was so proud that Craig made the right choice of coming to the hospital instead of committing suicide as he had first intended. I was wondering why Craig had changed his mind, I thought he was set on jumping off the bridge, but he just decided to call for help and going to the hospital. He sure changes his mind fast; I think he doesn’t really want to die. That’s why he’s seeking help.
I agree. I think Craig is just desperate. Maybe he wants attention, because he was so sure he was going to commit suicide but he ended up not doing it, like Katherine said. He also wanted to leave evidence that he was there, if you really wanted to die, wouldn't you just do it? You shouldn't have a plan, unless you WANTED somebody to catch you, or rescue you. The phone call with Nia as well, it was like he was leaving hints that he would commit suicide, so I don't think he was serious about it initially.
hi everyone i have just finished reading part 2.i think that Craig is improving a lot after begining the new medicine. i was very suprised to find out that nia has depression problems like craig. i agree with steve that craig should not have stopped taking the pills that the doctor gace him.
He also knew what would happen if he stopped talking the pills, but he did it anyways. It's kind of like he wanted to be depressed. Agree/Disagree?
I don’t think Craig deliberately stopped taking the drug because he doesn’t want to get better, but it’s just that he thinks that he’s all better so he doesn’t need it anymore. He thought it was just a phase, and it will be over soon. I can relate to that, because sometimes when I take medication, I stopped when I’m feeling better, I don’t continue it. I’ll think why bother when I’m all better, it’s the same issue with Craig he doesn’t think he needs it anymore. However, in his case, he should have continued, I think he learned his lesson. I thought it was hilarious when Craig started liking this Jennifer girl, but it turned out that she was actually a he! I felt so sorry for him, but it was so funny! LOL. Do you guys think Craig and this Noelle will become good friends? It seems like she’s been trying to help him, giving him advice about this mental ward.
Noelle left him a message to meet him, but she did not go, what do you think?Aaron also called Craig, and he told everyone where Craig was. Then Craig mentions Nia's depression, and she never told Aaron about her depression. However on the phone, she told Craig that she did till Aaron. Why do you think she kept it a secret?I don't think she trusts Aaron that much, so I don't think they're relationship will get far.Personally, I don't like Nia. I hope Craig finds somebody better.
It seems like Craig got over Nia, after they talked on the phone. i thought it was funny how Nia thought that the reason why Carig wanted to suicide was because of her. Craig tried explaining it's not her, but she keeps on assuming that it's all becuase of her. She's kind of conceited no offense.
Yeah i really don't like Nia. Especially after what she did when she broke up with Aaron. She just immediately went to Craig. I like his maps, and I guess that explains the cover. I like when he drew the maps to fit who they were and their personality. It seemed like he got to know everybody pretty well in just a week.He is most definately my favorite character.
Does anyone else think it is kinda strange that the author wrote this book a week after he was released from an adult psychiatric center? When you get released from a place like that, shouldn't you be trying to get your life back together? It seems strange that one of the first things he would do is write a book. Also, it only took him less than a month to write it. I think it should take longer to write a 444 page book
hi sorry for not blogging i completely forgot.i havent finished yet but almost. i think that craig is getting a lot beter after being in the hospital. he is making friends like humble. i was really suprised when Aaron called him and was high. i didnt think that they woulg get in a big fight like that. Steve i had no idea that the author was ever in an adult phychiatric center. i also agree with Katherine that it was strange when Nia thought Craig wanted to kill himself over her.
I agree with Will. I also didn't think Aaron and Craig would get into a fight when they talked. I did think it was kinda funny though when Aaron was high talking to Craig. Overall, I think this was a pretty good book. It was not one of the best books i ever read but I could think of a lot worse books. If I had to give it a grade, I would give it a B-,I would have gave it a B+ but it was kinda long.
To get back to what Steven was saying, about how the author writing the book after he got out of the hospital, I think one of the reason is that he's trying to write down what's in his memory. It's still fresh, so he still remembers a lot of the stuff. The longer he takes to write it down, the more things he will forget, or not remember. That's one of the reason I think why he wrote it so quick. I think Aaron got pissed because he knows that Nia is not telling him something, rather she told Carig instead. I think he was kind of jealous?
Maybe writing this book, was the author's "anchor"?
